Furnishings

Many of the furnishings are gifts.   Unfortunately, they were frequently not clearly recorded.   It is not certain whether those asterisked are the ones currently in use.

Altar Cloth*
In 1934, Mrs. H.J. Gilman presented the church "a fair white linen cloth" for the altar, made of Irish linen and "beautifully worked by herself. The cloth is embroidered with crosses and the sacred monogram, and the ends are of the finest crochet work in an appropriate ecclesiastical design."

Altar Crosses
A plain brass altar cross.

An ornate brass altar cross was given in 1902 by FCH in memory of his wife.   (FCH and HCH also gave the two light window of the Annunciation in the north wall.)   The inscription reads:

IN MEMORIAM / UXORIS DILECTISSIMAE / UT VOTUM AB IPSA SUSCEPTUM SOLVERET / HAN CRUCEM

An oak altar cross to stand on the main altar when the church is not in use was made by John Dipple in 2008.

Altar Rails
Oak altar rails for the Fynderne Chapel were donated in 1950 in memory of William James, churchwarden.

Banner*
A banner of St Wystan was donated by Mrs. Hooton sometime between 1911 and 1923.

Bookcase
Aan oak bookcase in the parvise room has a brass plate inscribed:

IN MEMORY OF A BELOVED PHYSICIAN / HERBERT GEORGE CRONK / 43 YEARS MEDICAL OFFICER AT /
REPTON SCHOOL AND FOR 25 YEARS / CHURCHWARDEN OF THIS CHURCH

Candlesticks*
Candlesticks were funded by subscription sometime between 1911 and 1923.

(Prayer) Candle Stand
Given in April 2021 (during the Covid pandemic) by Elizabeth and Danny Motley in memory of Elizabeth’s parents, The Rev’d John and Mrs Eileen Montgomery.

Oak Chair
The oak chair in the St Catherine's Chapel was given by Dr. G.A. Auden.   This chair (apart from the carving) is a replica of the 12th century bishop's chair from the Church at Tyldale, Osterdalen, Norway, now in Bergen Museum.   The carving represents motifs from 9th or 10th century pre-Conquest work in England or Wales.   There is a list of these on the underside of the seat.

Chalice*
A silver chalice was donated by Mrs Holbrooke sometime between 1911 and 1923.

Chancel
The chancel altar, panelling and stone flooring were installed - and the old communion rails re-installed - in 1935 as a memorial to Mary and Alice Twigg.

Choir Step Handrails
The handrails at the choir steps were donated by Sheila Bates.   The first was given in 1995 in memory of Sheila's first husband, Michael Henry, who had died the previous year.   The second was given in 2009.

Churchyard Seat
In 1993, Rosemary Russian, Kathleen Muir and Hugh Proctor gave the seat outside the tower in memory of their parents, Rev'd Cyril and Mary Proctor.   Cyril was for many years chaplain of Repton School.

Crucifix
The crucifix above the pulpit was donated by Isabelle Mayne in about 1990.

Crypt Candelabra
The candelabra was made by Mick Groom, the Repton blacksmith, in the mid 2000s.

Crypt Stairway Rails
In 1937, the rails beside the crypt stairway were installed as a memorial to Francis Shaw who died in 1906.

Lectern
The lectern, in memory of Adam Bell, dates from 1887, 10 years after his death.

Lighting and Electrics
Renewal of the lighting and most of the electrics in 2017 was funded by a most generous bequest from Mary and Ken Vincent who died in 2013.

Lighting Cupboard
In 2001 Rosalind (Ros) Hudson donated the lighting cupboard, carved to match the organ, in memory of her father, W.A. Daniel (sometime churchwarden), and her husband, Rev'd O.B. Hudson, a curate at Repton from 1937-1939. Ros and her family were greatly involved in the life of St Wystan's for at least 100 years, until Ros left Repton in 2005.

Litany desk*
A litany desk was donated by Mrs. Partridge sometime between 1911 and 1923.

Memorial Book
The Memorial Book for Repton was dedicated on 11th June 2006 in memory of Henry Chilton.   Its case was made by John Dipple.

Paschal Candle
The Paschal Candle of English oak was made by John Dipple and used for the first time on Easter Day 2005.

Processional Cross*
A processional cross was funded by subscription sometime between 1911 and 1923.

Pulpit
The pulpit was set up in 1886 as a memorial to the Rev'd William Williams, Vicar of Repton from 1857 to 1882.

Pyx*
A silver pyx was donated by Mrs. McMaster sometime between 1911 and 1923.

St Wystan's Statue (over the porch)
Rev'd S.B. Stallard-Penoyre of Westbury-on-Trim gave the figure of St Wystan over the porch door in 1911.   He and his wife, Alice, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Auden of Danesgate, Repton, also donated a window "In thanksgiving for their marriage and in memory of two beloved parents".

St Wystan's Sword (over the porch)
Pamela Carr gave St Wystan's Sword in 2003 in memory of her late husband, Douglas.   Douglas Carr, who died in 1991, was a major in The Royal Berkshire Regiment and saw active service in Malaya. When he left the army he became Secretary of Derbyshire County Cricket Club. He returned to live in Repton where he was educated and his father had been Bursar of Repton School. He was much involved in the life of the village and served on the PCC.

Vestry
Rhoda Hemmings (1914-2003) left a generous bequest, which funded the refurbishment of the vestry in 2006.   Part was also used to buy a full set of hymn books.

War Memorial (in the porch)
The War Memorial was dedicated on 1st November 1917.   Its cost of £35 was raised by public subscription.   Two silver vases were presented by Mrs. Pattinson and family in memory of Haydn Pattinson.   In April 1918, a silver vase was presented by Mr. & Mrs. Arnold in memory of their sons, fallen in the war, and in July, two more given by Mr. J.T. Taylor and family in memory of J.R. Taylor.
