Changing Seasons

The Vicarage late raspberries are cropping heavily and hedgerows are spotted red, orange, black and blue with berries of many shapes and sizes. Some leaves are already crunching underfoot, and others will shortly follow after a frost or two. Mornings are crisper, dewdrops hang on cobwebs, evenings are drawing in and we all dig out of our drawers those tops that are too warm for summer but not thick enough for winter. It is that season of autumn, changeable autumn, transitional autumn.

Blessed with changing seasons throughout the year we often think of our lives in terms being broken up into seasons. Childhood, teenage years, adulthood, prime of life, retired, are a few of the titles we give those stages. Of course, as with the 4 seasons, so there are good and bad things in each stage. My teenage years were wonderful, involved in so many activities and organisations, pushing boundaries to discover who I was. And yet there were difficult times learning the hard reality of how others suffered when I over-stepped the mark, the painful reality of rejection, the realisation that life can be as cruel as it can be kind.

The church also has seasons, varying in colour and feel. Advent leads us to Christmas, Epiphany continues to celebrate the light of Christ, until the more sombre season of Lent. That takes us to Passiontide and Holy Week, when we walk with Jesus those last days of his earthly life, before the great resurrection celebration of Easter. Then comes the long season of Trinity, it can be called Ordinary time, lasting until All Saints when we count down the 4 Sundays towards Advent Sunday when our new year begins once more.

Again, there are good and bad things about each season. They carry us through the Christian story, reminding us just how much our loving God has done and continues to do for us. But, if they are observed correctly, they challenge us, can make us uncomfortable, reminding us that our Christian faith is not just about receiving, but about giving; not just about going to church, but being the church in the world; about how easily we get things wrong, balanced of course, with reminders of how God can put things right!

The four seasons are to enjoy as nature responds to the winds of change throughout the year. Many seasons of life, as our bodies and minds change, with so much richness of opportunity and a wealth of experiences to enjoy. The seasons of our faith, food for our souls and spirits, changing ways to get to know God better, to grow in love of Him and of others. Seasonal blessings to you all!

Thanks and Tributes

Don Acford
Margaret Acford and family of Newton Solney wish to sincerely thank all friends and neighbours for their help and support for Don during his illness, and also for everyone's presence at the celebration of his life. This was of great comfort to the family and very much appreciated.

Nora May Fletcher
. . . died of eosophagal cancer on 21st July aged 91. Her funeral took place on 9th August at Bretby Crematorium. Nora was born in Eggington and as a youngster moved to Willington. In 1948 she married Alan and they moved to Repton in 1951. She loved local village life. In her later years she attended the 'Evergreens' and always looked forward to seeing her friends at the Luncheon Club on Fridays. The family would like to thank everyone for their kind words, and donations totalling £300 have been forwarded to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Matthew William Brook
A much overdue update, time is a stubborn healer it would seem. We are trying to resume 'normal service' but grief is not like learning to read, it's not a linear process, and we have hit a few bumps along the way.

We wanted to thank everyone who attended Matthew's Memorial Service last April. It meant a lot to us that you came to say your goodbyes, and it was truly comforting to be able to talk about Matthew and to share memories. We particularly want to thank you for the generous donations to both the Derbyshire Mountain Rescue Team, and to the MattyB Trust. The Trust recently paid for a state of the art watch alarm, which monitors pre-seizure and seizure activity, for a young man in his 20's who has severe night time seizures and the occasional day time tonic clinic seizure.

We are hoping we can continue to help families like this to live as normal lives as possible, and are so grateful for your generosity - we feel it is important that people know that their kindness has already made a difference.

The more I talk to people about Matt and his life, the more I appreciate the time he spent working at Topman. There seems to be so many young people out there, like Matthew, with epilepsy, autism or both (it seems to be a common combination) who are perfectly competent and capable, but who are not given employment or quickly lose their jobs because they don't quite fit the mould.

Thank you again for your continued support and kindness.
Karen Brook Eaton

The Memorial Book

Repton has a fine memorial book permanently on display in St Catherine's Chapel in the north aisle of St Wystan's Church. It was donated in memory of Henry Chilton as a place to commemorate former residents of Repton.   All are eligible and welcome, as well as those buried or interred in St Wystan's churchyard or Monsom Lane cemetery.   There is no charge but a donation towards church funds is greatly appreciated.   All we need is the full name and the dates of birth and death.

Please contact us.

Blessing the Village Hall and Blessing your Homes
It was a great privilege to be invited to bless the new Village Hall during the Opening Ceremony. As I tried to explain to those present blessing an object is slightly different to blessing people [I tend not to sprinkle people with Holy Water – well, not very often!!] and involves setting something apart for a special purpose. I used the examples of "A wooden table once blessed can be an Altar, a ceramic bowl on a wrought iron stand once blessed becomes a font." Over my years of Ministry I have blessed many buildings, the majority of which have been houses. I have blessed both new houses and older houses that people are making their new home.

You don't have to be new to a home either. Sometimes people have wanted their houses to have a fresh beginning – like we decorate and re-carpet, physically cleaning and getting rid of what's been there before, so a blessing can be a spiritual cleansing. I remember in Essex a lady who had been abused by her husband and wanted a new beginning for her home. The Blessing was part of her letting go of what had taken place there.

Since Blessing the Village Hall I have been asked to bless a couple of homes. If you would like me to bless your home or place of work, I would regard it as a great privilege….do get in touch.
Martin - The Vicar

The Bishop's Badge
In the Derby Diocese there is an award called The Bishop's Badge. It is awarded at a special service in the Cathedral to members of the church who have given of their time and talents to serving the church and/or local community in any number of ways. It recognises those who have 'gone that extra mile' and is a way for the church to say "thank you" for all that they have done. This year recipients of The Bishop's Badge on September 22nd were Polly Faulkner, Jan Gilham, Carol Lloyd, Christopher Lloyd, Wendy Longden, Simon Mann, Wendy Mann and Karen Perks.

Thank you from all of us and well done.
The Vicar

World Mental Health Day:   Wellbeing & Wholeness at St Wystan's
Thursday 10th October, 2 - 7 pm
To mark World Mental Health Day we are offering everyone an opportunity to find a little space and peace in their lives. Whether you are suffering a mental health issue, under a bit of stress or anxious about something, caring for someone who is ill, or you are absolutely fine but would enjoy that extra opportunity to be calm in the midst of a busy day, you are invited to St Wystan's.

While quiet music adds to the calm, there will be various 'stations' around church where different, simple activities will help you let go and chill out. You will also be free to simply come in and sit a while doing absolutely nothing if that is what you choose to do. The Vicar and members of the Pastoral Visitors Team will be around for you to talk to if you wish. If you want to have someone say a prayer for yourself or for someone else then that will be on offer too. You may be welcomed on the door, and we will be there for you, but we won't intrude on your space unless you want us to.

It is important to us that this event is open to anyone and everyone. You will be free to come and go as you please. Drinks and biscuits will be freely available.
The Rev'd Martin Flowerdew

Repton Village Hall

Open for business!
After just under two weeks of fairly frantic activity with help from many people, the new village hall opened to visitors on 31st August with a formal opening concert the next day. The Burton Concert Band led by David Haines kindly provided the music, testing out the new acoustics. During the concert, for the first time in the hall, the audience enjoyed sitting on comfortable chairs thanks to an anonymous and very generous donation.

The audience included many people who had contributed help to the project along the way. Also in attendance were our councillors, the council leader and MP. A brief summary of how the project started and what was needed to bring it to fruition was given by Peter Court, Adrian Argyle and Carol Lloyd. After a brief blessing by the vicar, Peter Court unveiled a plaque to commemorate the day. It is very difficult to thank everybody adequately, so the plaque is phrased in general terms.

The Village Show on the following Saturday was a further opportunity for people to see the new hall. It looked very spectacular with all the flowers and produce brought for the competition. During all these occasions the kitchen was very busy serving people in the hall and in the cafe area. There was a tremendous buzz in the atmosphere, probably helped by the very pleasant weather.

The first activity in the hall began on Monday, September 2nd. We are very pleased that nearly all of our regular users have chosen to return and that the booking enquiries are coming in at a very high level. Inevitably there were teething problems, particularly with the technology, but everybody has been very patient. Activities have been able to take place simultaneously both in the meeting room and in the main hall.

We have finally been able to take everything out of the storage generously provided for free, and to determine how we can store everything within the building. Users have been very good about reducing unnecessary storage. Progress with the landscaping is described in the October Gardening notes by Pauline Little. (See below.)

In parallel with all this activity, a small group of people are working very hard to get the community café ready to open on 2nd November. At the time of writing, over 70 people have expressed an interest in volunteering for one or more sessions a month. Visits to other successful community cafés have been very informative and training sessions for volunteers are being planned. In addition to workers in the café, we are also seeking those who are willing to bake on a regular basis. Suggestions for themed activities are coming in, for example winter walks and arts and crafts sessions, but we would also like to hear your suggestions. These can be sent to the café Facebook page or to the chair, contact details below. It would also be nice to stock the café with board games so we are looking for donations of any spare games that people may have. After Christmas, there is a plan to transfer the community library from the church to the gallery at the hall, and arrange afternoon sessions in the café for the after-school period.

Repton Village & History

An amazing 17 years of fundraising
A huge thank you is not enough praise for everyone who helped us to raise over £1,500 at our Garage Sale on 7th September. We could not have done this without the kind generosity of donors, helpers and buyers. The final figure will be published as soon as possible as there are still some monies to come in. All proceeds to the National Brain Cancer Appeal.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the last 17 years of fundraising, and yes, this really is the last one!

Repton Village & School Sale of Work & Autumn Fair
Saturday 2nd November, 2.30 pm in the grounds of Repton School
For those new to the village, the Sale of Work has been a fixture in the village for over 140 years, and is an event that raises considerable funds for a range of local and national charitable causes. Alongside stalls run by the school pupils, we are including some popular independent small business sellers, including: Great Cards from Kate, Mayflower Jewellery, Forteys of Melbourne and Houlier Wines. So whether it's the ducking stool, tea and cake, games and activities for children, starting to do a little Christmas shopping, we hope that you will come along and enjoy the day!
Who benefits?
Last year's Sale of Work grand total was just over £18,000 - raised by events associated with the day. We always try to distribute a good deal of funds to charities and organisations within 5 to 10 miles of Repton, including St Wystan's Church, Repton Lunch Club, Repton Casuals, Repton Village Hall, Repton Primary School and Newton Solney Infant School.
Charitable Suggestions
As always we would welcome suggestions for charitable organisations to receive funds. If you would like to nominate a charity or organisation, please get in touch using the details below.
We need your help!
We are always so grateful for the help and generous contributions you give. The following stallholders would greatly welcome contributions:

Repton Village Market Stall

welcomes any contributions of any suitable items such as home-baked goods, preserves, pickles and chutneys, and anything in a bottle or jar, savoury, sweet, scented or decorative. Please contact Frances Wimbush on 703180. Alternatively, please drop any items in to Pears School on Saturday morning before 11 am. Then do come and find us on the day!

House and Grand Raffles

A number of the school boarding houses put on smaller raffles, with tickets on sale beforehand and on the day. These Houses would welcome prize donations including wine and bubbly, hampers, chocolate, gift sets, vouchers, and other items befitting a raffle by Wednesday 30th October. Please do get in touch with myself – see below.
A fitting end to the day!
In the late afternoon, the school hopes to close the Sale of Work with a musical performance. Warm and delicious refreshments will be on sale, so please do come along. Our pupils will be holding charity collection buckets, and all contributions together with proceeds from the sale of refreshments will be added to the Sale of Work Grand Total.

We look forward to welcoming many of you to the day itself, we're working hard to put on a memorable and enjoyable afternoon. Do look out for posters and flyers in the village in the coming weeks!
Gemma Hill, Sale of Work Organiser at Repton School

If you can sing, come and join us at MusSoc
MusSoc is open to everyone. Why don't you give it a go? This term, under the Directorship of Oliver Walker, Repton School's Director of Music, we will be rehearsing Handel's 'Messiah' for a performance in Pears School next term on Sunday 19th January. (Do note the date!)

Rehearsals start on 5th September: Thursdays, 7.30 - 8.30, in the Music School, Repton School

New members are particularly welcome. Perhaps you sang in your school choir, or have not sung for a while and would like to try again. We are a friendly choir and you will be given every encouragement. There are no auditions, but an ability to sing and read music would be helpful! Why don't you come along and find out for yourself.

For further information, please contact Rosie Carpenter.

Christmas Tree Festival in St Wystan's Church
Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th December
Where we have contact information for organisations and groups within the village we have sent a letter inviting them to decorate trees. If we haven't been able to contact you and you would like to take part, please do get in touch. There is no theme for decorating trees, which should give plenty of scope for imagination and it would be nice if families could be part of this festival.

We are aiming to raise funds for fittings for the new Repton Village Hall and St Wystan's Church. If you would like to take part or need more information please contact us by the beginning of October. It would be lovely if you could join us.
Jenny Sayers, Repton Christmas Tree Festival Co-ordinator

Repton Baby and Toddler
For the past 9 months whilst the new Village Hall was being built, we met at the Iris Bentley Pavilion and stored our toys in a container on the farm close by. The container was broken into this summer but the potential thieves kindly decided to leave our toys, meaning we could move them to the new village hall. The move proved to be very exciting!

Tom, one of our toddler parents, arrived one Wednesday morning with his JCB to lift the container onto his trailer and transport it to Askew Grove. A wonderful sight that my little boy slept through.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Repton Parish Council for allowing us to use the Pavilion, Tom and Hannah for lending us the container and heavy machinery, and Mrs Hallifield for looking after our toys.

We now meet in the wonderful new Village Hall and couldn't be happier with it. I would like to thank the Village Hall Committee, especially Sarah and Kyran, for all their hard work and dedication.

We meet every Wednesday at Repton Village Hall, everyone welcome from 0 to school age, 10.15 am - 12 pm. Find us on Facebook or contact Natalie Matthews.

Scouts
The Scouts have started back and are getting stuck into the autumn / winter programme of events. On Wednesday nights they have tackled the 'Tent Challenge' where they attempted to construct a complete tent out of a mixture of surplus tent parts that didn't necessarily match up. They have also been working towards their chefs badge, practised some new knots to go on their knot boards, and learnt about sound waves whilst making boomwhackers and trying to play tunes with them.

In September all sections of the Repton Scout Group went camping along with their parents on a group family camp to Willesley in Ashby. It was perfect camping weather for the event and everyone had a great time climbing, abseiling, pot-holing, zip-wiring and singing songs around the campfire.

If you would like to know more about Scouts, you're interested in joining as a helper or would like your child to join please contact Peter Tubby.

Repton Cubs
After a lovely summer break 15 cubs, 2 leaders and 2 helpers travelled to Youlbury Campsite near Oxford for a fantastic weekend of camping and adventurous activities. All the cubs took part in zip-wiring, fencing, archery, team building, backwoods cooking, 3G swinging and had a fantastic time. Some of the cubs (and leaders) had to push themselves to take part in some of the high and scary activities but managed to rise to the challenge. In the time around the organised activities, there were games, a campfire (with songs and marshmallows) and other challenges to keep everyone entertained. A fantastic time – with a little sleep- was had by all. We would like to thank Pete and Paul for accompanying us – we are hugely grateful as we could not have run the camp without you.

Now we are back in the Autumn term and have started working on our teamwork challenge badge, thinking about teams and our roles in them, and taking part in team building activities. These help us learn to work together, taking turns in leading the others in the group.

Our final piece of news is that Sam, our Assistant Section Leader, has gained a place at University so will be leaving us at the end of September. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Sam for everything he has done to help make the Cub Pack a fun and successful place to spend a Wednesday evening.

We have a few spaces for children aged 8-10 so if you are interested please contact Jez Brooks for further information.

Repton Beavers
1st Repton Beavers had a very busy Summer term. As well as working hard towards the Challenge Awards, we had lots of fun making bug hotels, boating on the river, geocaching and litter picking around the village. We hosted a Pirate Themed District Fun Day which was enjoyed as much by leaders as the children. We have another busy term ahead as we concentrate on our older Beavers achieving their Bronze Chief Scout Award before they move up to Cubs at Christmas. We will be going climbing, learning the Green Cross Code, some First Aid, and what to do in an emergency. We are also looking forward to our Italian night where we'll be making pizzas and learning the Promise in Italian.

We are currently full to capacity but will have some places in the New Year. If your child is interested in joining us please get in touch with one of the leaders below to put their name on the waiting list. We meet at The Den, Mitre Drive, Repton on Mondays from 6.15 to 7.15 pm. We would really like another leader to join us, so if you can spare a couple of hours each week and would like to be involved in a really rewarding venture, then please contact Liz Massey-Beeston or Caroline Ruff.

Repton Community Wildlife Group
A facebook group - Repton Community Wildlife Group has been created with the intention of forming a community wildlife/gardening and conservation project which everyone in the village could get involved in. The Wildlife Group is the idea of retired local environmental biologist Andrea Ford, who is looking for help in moving the project forward.

She writes: "My hope is to get enough people involved so as to form a group that is accessible to everyone of all ages. My passion is to teach younger generations about our natural world but I'm sure there will be those of older generations that would be able to talk about how they've seen our environment change, and possibly even want to learn more about conservation. There is so much potential for learning and safeguarding our natural world. I'm starting to realise that what is a simple idea is going to need people who are able to do paper work for grants, help find permissions for land, work out who owns land etc etc. Logistically it's going to take people who have skills and contacts that I don't have." To get involved please visit us on facebook.

Repton Village Society
We enjoyed our September Meeting in the Meeting Room in the new village hall, which provided a good environment for our talk. Helen Chambers, dressed in clothing of the time, gave an informative talk on 'Women in the Civil War'. Women played an unsung but vital role in the war, and were often left to look after houses and lands with so many of the men under arms. Families and neighbours split on different sides so life was not easy.

Their problems were compounded by armies and raiding parties moving across the countryside, which often resulted in becoming involved in protecting their houses with very limited numbers of defenders. Some survived the sieges for many days but often the results, as in any civil war, caused many privations and deaths. Helen highlighted in particular the difficulties faced by the women who were left looking after the houses of the Stanhopes and Chesterfields who owned major estates at Bretby and Lichfield.

At our next meeting - 3rd October at 7.30 pm in Repton Village Hall Meeting Room - Kevin Reynolds' subject will be 'In time for Halloween, a talk about Bats'. Kevin has previously given an excellent talk on dragonflies so we can look forward to an informative and entertaining evening.

Repton WI at the new village hall
Our September meeting was the first in the new hall. We were pleased to be 'home' again and everyone was really impressed with the new building and facilities. There was a party atmosphere as members and lots of guests came to enjoy an evening of dancing. A good time was had by all, though there were some tired feet by the end of our hour's instruction and dancing. Wendy Bates was an excellent teacher and managed to get the majority of us on the floor. Fabulous! It was so popular that a repeat performance has been requested. Plans for the autumn include: Tuesday 8th October 7.30pm: Annual Meeting with Pizza & Fizz.

Tuesday 15 October 7pm: Programme planning meeting at the Red Lion. Everybody welcome to come and share your ideas for next year's programme.

Monday 21 October: Coffee morning at Whyte's in Tutbury.

Friday - Sunday 25 / 27 October: Repton Literary Festival where the WI will be offering a 'tea and cakes' service on the Saturday afternoon. It was very popular last year, so we'll make sure we have a good stock of refreshments at affordable prices.

Tuesday 12 November 7.30pm: Christmas present wrapping workshop – learn how to wrap that difficult present.

Tuesday 10 December 7.30pm: The Christmas Party, hosted by the committee.

As usual, you can see the photos and read about our activities on the Facebook page.

Repton Parish Council
Planning Application 2019/0948 (Axis 50 at Burnaston Cross, Willington): The link on the SDDC Panning website is Planning Application 2019/0948 (Axis 50 at Burnaston Cross, Willington). We have been asked by Willington Parish Council to support them in their objections to this development. Repton Parish Council are sending in their objection, but many individual comments could make all the difference. The main concern surrounds the increased volume of traffic, both lorries and cars, on an already over stretched road system to the detriment of all our villages.

PC Office Move: The Parish Office has moved to the new Repton Village Hall. Thank you to Howard and Jane Awbrey who donated much needed lockable office furniture. Please be patient for the next couple of months whilst all the paper work is transferred and re-filed into the new cabinets, we are also having problems getting broadband and a phone line installed.

Survey: Residents will be receiving a survey very shortly requesting opinions on affordable housing and accommodation for the elderly. We do hope you will complete it as it will provide important information and hopefully improve our ability to influence Derbyshire County Council and South Derbyshire District Council.

Preservation of Repton Cross: Tenders have been received, and it is anticipated that work on preservation will commence before Christmas.

Footpath between Repton & Willington: The reply received from the Highways department at Derbyshire County Council regarding the state of the footpath was considered unsatisfactory. We are asking for a site meeting to push for improvement.

Christmas Tree: Plans are moving forward to provide a village Christmas Tree by the Kindersley Gate opposite St Wystan's church. It is being organised collaboratively between Repton WI, Repton Parish Council and Repton School.

Poppies: Poppies will again tumble down from the Cross for Remembrance Day. Thank you to Trevor Skeith and John McMahon for organising this for us.

Planters on triangle: Three planters are being ordered to stand on the triangle by the Cross. Volunteers from the allotments have offered to help, so we hope to see them filled before Christmas.

The next meeting will be on Monday October 14th in Milton Village Hall. A Parish Meeting at 7 pm will be followed by the Parish Council meeting.

Milton WI
With no meeting in August members enjoyed a social outing to Cromford Wharf including a trip on the Birdswood canal boat. On arrival what impressed us was ducks! Not just a few ducks, but a very impressive gathering of ducks of different breeds and ages. The baby ducks were a delight, with three tiny ones hiding in the grassland waiting to take the plunge.

The cargo area of the boat had been converted into seating and all enjoyed a gentle cruise along the canal to Leawood Pump House, with points of interest being pointed out by the crew. Members were shown the tiny living area of the boat and mini cooking range whilst a volunteer described what life was like for the family when the boat was working. Baby slept on a shelf and older children slept on the coal in the cargo area!

On our return to the Wharf members enjoyed a tasty lunch in the café before having a wander around Arkwright's Mill. Many thanks for Jan for arranging such an enjoyable day out.

Meeting September 18th

Following a short business meeting, our speaker Heather Coleman who is a Community Safety Officer with Derby Fire Service gave a very interesting and quite alarming talk about safety in the home. Heather explained the importance of smoke alarms, the dangers of overloading plug extensions, kitchen fires and being aware of escape routes. Margaret Connolly served us delicious refreshments.

Our next meeting is The AGM in Milton village hall on Wednesday October 16th 7.30 pm. New members always welcome.

At our first meeting of the autumn our numbers were quite low, as a number of members were away on holiday. The speaker for the afternoon was Denise Austin who not only gave a very interesting talk on the benefits of Reflexology, but she also had her audience doing a range of seated exercises which our members could do at home to maintain their flexibility.

At our last meeting we listened spellbound to Chris Hyde talking about volunteering for the charity 'Blood Bikes'. His area covers three counties with 350 BB members. They work 365 days a year, twelve hours per day, on a rota system to deliver their packages to hospitals. He provided emotional details of patients and doctors wanting to meet whoever had saved lives, and his audience were silent taking in every word. Liaising with A&E in hospitals, but working independently, Blood Bikes transport their packages from A to B often using a relay system of bikes. The charity depends on donations and fundraising events so please spread the word.

Our next meeting is on the 8th October and the subject is 'Behind the scenes at Waitrose and John Lewis. You are invited to join us at Newton Solney Village Hall at 7.30.

Newton Solney Parish Council
At the Parish Council meeting scheduled for Friday13th September, there were insufficient Parish Councillors present to form a quorum, and as such no formal meeting took place. However a number of Parishioners did attend and an informal discussion took place on the following matters;

Silver birch tree on Blacksmiths Lane – Complaints were put forward about the nuisance that it was causing relating to breathing and general discharge of seeds.

Anti social behaviour – Concerns were raised over incidents in Trent Lane and Church Lane.

Planning application for an agricultural building off The End - Considered to be inappropriate.

Suggestions were made relating to these items which will be formally discussed at the next Council meeting with appropriate action.

Next meeting: It is proposed to call for an interim meeting before October to discuss the above and regularise a number of issues. Details will be displayed on the notice board. The next scheduled Parish Council meeting is on 11th October at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. All are welcome.

Health Matters

Seasonal Influenza Vaccines at Willington Surgery
Flu can be very unpleasant, but you will usually begin to feel better within about a week. However for young children, people aged over 65, people with long-term health conditions and pregnant women flu can be far more serious. So if you are aged 65 or over (by 31st March 2020), it is recommended that you have an annual influenza injection.

If you are aged 18-64 the injected flu vaccine is offered free of charge on the NHS to anyone with these serious long-term health conditions or if you are a carer or pregnant. Saturday clinics are available to book for those over 65 (or 65 by 31st March 2020) on 5th October 2019. For patients aged 18-64 with one of the above conditions the clinic is on 19th October 2019. If these dates are not convenient, you will be offered an alternative.

Pneumococcal Vaccine

Patients age 65 and over, who have not previously been vaccinated, are entitled to a pneumococcal vaccine which could be administered at the same time as the flu vaccine. It can prevent some cases of pneumonia. If you would like to receive a pneumococcal vaccine please ask when booking your influenza appointment.

NHS Shingles Programme 2019/2020

This year we are able to vaccinate anyone born between 02/09/1942 - 01/09/1948 and 02/09/39 - 01/09/40 who have not previously been vaccinated. Patients aged 80 are no longer eligible for the vaccine due to the reducing efficacy of the vaccine as age increases. Please book appointments with reception: 01283 703318.

Gardening Notes

Gardening for the village hall
Back in the summer Sarah and Kyran Farrell visited our garden on one of our open days and asked if we would be interested in helping with planting plans for the village hall. At that stage we had no idea what the outdoor space of the village hall would look like but it sounded like a very interesting project and not something we had done before. Months later, after several site visits with tape measures and a long pokey stick (to get a feel for what the ground was really like under the pristine looking topsoil) we put together a few plans which we discussed with our gardening friends. It was immediately obvious that it was a very hot, sunny site with even more reflected heat from the road, pavement, and a wall, and that the soil was very well drained too.

We realised very early on that the view of the Village Hall particularly from the High Street and Askew Grove needed to be very open and welcoming, and not be interrupted by tall plants. On the other hand we felt the Brookside Close side by the artificial grass would benefit from being slightly enclosed by a short hedge – perhaps beech (which grows so well next to the nearby Health Centre) this would also provide a sense of screening for the Brookside Close residents.

I am not disciplined enough to follow rigid colour schemes however the café colours of deep blue and ochre, are just the sort of colours that I often use in my garden so we will try to include plenty of them.

It was with some trepidation that we started preparing the beds, we didn't find too much typical builder's rubble, however alongside the pavement there was barely any soil in places and dumps of roadstone and grit as well as a large concrete ramp holding up the edge of the pavement. After a good deal of help from a number of people we have what we believe will be a reasonable growing medium, well enriched with horse manure (and unfortunately probably lots of nettle and buttercup seeds too).

So, what are we planning to plant? We have set ourselves quite a few ground rules: everything must be easy to maintain, healthy, and be able to stand a degree of neglect so nothing that needs staking or constant dead heading or pruning, nothing poisonous, irritating, or very prickly, and nothing too invasive or too seedy. Obviously we need to select plants that suit the situation and growing conditions. Where possible plants should have a long period of interest and be "best in breed". As a certified plantaholic probably the hardest thing for me is to restrict the range of plants and include lots of repetition rather than sneaking in an extra, favourite plant. The funds are running low so we are trying to be as economical as possible so there will be many plants provided from our own garden and where we are buying plants (I don't have a spare beech hedge up my sleeve!) we will choose small plants and we will all have to be patient!

At the moment we are concentrating on the area around the village hall itself but we are thinking about the area by the brook, which is a very different challenge.

Please bear with us, it won't be instantly perfect and we will have to make adjustments as we go along but thank you for your kind words and support as you pass by.
Pauline Little
