It can't always be a Happy Christmas

Where has the time gone? It is not long since we were complaining that shops had Christmas goodies on display before harvest was over, let alone Hallowe'en and Remembrance Sunday, and now Christmas is on top of us. We all have many things occupying our minds in the coming weeks as we look forward to sharing with family and friends over the Christmas period. This is what I wrote last year at Christmas when I was off work with depression myself.
Be Happy but please remember . . .
Be happy you that have company this Christmastime Make the most of every moment, enjoy, rejoice, and make merry.
Be happy you that are surrounded by loved ones this Christmastime,
Hold hands, join hearts, laugh, play together and be as one.
Be happy that you have a strong faith this Christmastime
Know the peace of the Christ Child and count your many blessings.
But please, be mindful of those who are not so blest:

Those who have no card, no tinsel, no tree, no gifts;
Those who see others with so much, but themselves have so little;
Those who, while others feast, have hunger as their companion;
Those whose front door will not open to joyous greetings and comings together;
Those who are alone;
Those whose family do not remember them;
Those who in the midst of a crowd are lonely;
Those for whom the constant good cheer of the radio or TV is a weight dragging them down into the deep;
Those who have lost loved ones for whom this season seems so much the worse than any other;
Those who are caught in a web of circumstance they cannot break free from:
Those who are in pain - of illness, of loss, of the nearness of death;
Those children preyed on by relatives; partners battered and bruised by the one they love;
Those who are made fun of, belittled, ignored, abused, attacked, hated;
Those for whom each second is a minute, each minute an hour and each hour an eternity;
Those for whom today is no different to yesterday, who know tomorrow will be no different from today;
Those who feel they have nothing but emptiness, loneliness and pointlessness;
Those who long for just a glimmer of light in the midst of darkness.

Be mindful of them – for they are many
And there but for the grace of God walk you.

I know several people in our communities who open their homes to others over the Christmas period and hope that my words will encourage others to do the same.

I hope you have a really peace filled and blessed Christmas and New Year, and if you want to weave into your Christmas celebrations a reminder of the real 'Reason for the Season', then details of all our local church services are in the card accompanying this magazine. You are most welcome to come to any or to all!
Rev'd Martin Flowerdew

It was donated in memory of Henry Chilton as a place to commemorate former residents of Repton.   All are eligible and welcome, as well as those buried or interred in St Wystan's churchyard or Monsom Lane cemetery.   There is no charge but a donation towards church funds is greatly appreciated.   All we need is the full name and the dates of birth and death.

Please contact Wendy Longden.

Repton Benefice

Remembering Loved Ones
On Sunday November 3rd we held our annual benefice service, this year at St Mary's in Newton Solney, for people to remember loved ones. Nearly 70 people gathered together and we shared a service drawn largely from one in use in Dunblane Cathedral. Not only did we light candles to remember our loved ones, but also used autumn leaves to give thanks for the part they had played in our lives. The leaves were used to form the shape of a Cross, a reminder to us of our Christian belief in the new life we share after our death, and that although our loved ones have left us, it is but for a while before we will be reunited with them. The names of over 120 loved ones were read out loud during this ever popular service.
Martin

We hope as many villagers as possible will come along to The Arch on to enjoy the 'switch on' of the Christmas Tree lights. It should be an exciting occasion; there will be festive music, Christmas singing, some twinkling lights and we have it on good authority that Santa himself may well put in an appearance. The Boot Inn has extended an invitation to those present to join them afterwards for complimentary mulled wine & mince pies. A hog roast will also be on sale for anyone in need of a more substantial supper. Do come and enjoy the festive fun!

Repton Scouts
It's been a busy month for the Scouts who have been working on their Faith Activity badge and visited St Wystan's church where Vicar Martin Flowerdew gave them an informative and entertaining tour of the church and its history. Whilst there five new Scouts were invested in the Crypt which added a sense of occasion to the ceremony.

On another night the Scouts were visited by the Staunton Harold Sailability Trust who gave the Scouts a presentation explaining their work taking disabled people sailing, and hopefully the Scouts will get involved with their good work next year.

During one weekend the Scouts took part in a forestry day at woodlands in Bretby, part of the National Forest Reforestation Programme. The Scouts undertook conservation work in the woodlands, built some shelters using natural materials, hunted for animal tracks to identify wildlife in the area and laid some trails for each other to follow. Everyone had a great time and the Scouts will be returning in the future to do some more work and see the changes in the woodlands during different seasons.

If you would like to know more about Scouts, you're interested in joining as a helper, or would like your child to join please contact Peter Tubby.

Repton Cubs
The first meeting of the half term was a games night but it also saw a number of Cubs rewarded for their hard work over the past half term with their Communicator and Teamwork badges. Before the half term break, we enjoyed a session climbing at Clip and Climb in Derby. All the children had a fantastic time and were able to push themselves to climb higher or faster than they had done before.

We were excited to be able to award the Silver Chief Scout award to Tom during the last meeting of the half term. This the highest award in Cub Scouting and shows that he has gained all his Challenge Awards and six Activity Badges. No mean feat. Well done Tom and good luck in Scouts!

Cubs meet on a Wednesday evening in the Den between 6.00 and 7.30. We have a very few spaces for children aged 8-10 so if you are interested please contact Jez Brooks for further information.

Repton Beavers
At 1st Repton Beavers we welcome girls and boys aged between 6 and 8. This half term we are preparing for Remembrance Sunday by learning about why we commemorate the occasion and we have been practicing marching for the Parade. Some of our older Beavers are moving up to Cubs next term, so we have been busy completing their Challenge Awards and Chief Scout Bronze Awards.

We have some fun activities ahead, leading up to Christmas, with an Italian night when we will learn the Beavers Promise in Italian and be making delicious pizzas, we'll be learning some first aid and making decorations for the Village Christmas Tree Festival.

We are currently full to capacity, but if your child is interested in joining us please get in touch with one of the leaders below to put their name on the waiting list. We meet at The Den, Mitre Drive, Repton on Mondays from 6.15 to 7.15 pm. Leaders are: Liz Massey-Beeston 07866 929912, Caroline Ruff 07736 929376. Email us.

Repton Village History Group
We were pleased to be able to have a bookstall and display at this year's Literary Festival where we also launched our latest publication – a trail around St Wystan's churchyard. It provides a couple of hours of exploration of a number of interesting features as well as intriguing monuments and graves of interesting people. We have included 20 items with brief commentaries and thumbnail sketches and a map to help you locate them.

We also contributed a talk on Repton's early days – from the Stone Age through to the Tudors which was part of a strong historical theme this year. There were excellent tours around the older parts of the school and Dr Cat Jarman was back to explain what her research had found about Viking Repton and the mass grave. She commented that Viking gaming pieces found here are made of lead, but back in their homeland, they are made of stone or clay or glass. This led her to wonder if part of the interest the Vikings had in the early Repton monastery was in the lead mines they owned and operated in Derbyshire.

Anyone interested in joining the group or wanting more information should contact John Kidd on 01283 701991 or Andy Austen.

Repton Village Society
Our next meeting is on the 2th January, 7.30 pm in Repton Village Hall Meeting Room.

We do not have a meeting in December so our next meeting is in the New Year. In fact this should be a lovely evening to relax after all the hassle. Angela Sargent will be talking on 'The Farming Year'. Angela is a local farmer and will be looking at the cycle of seasons on the farm. Given the current 'discussions' on the environment this should be a fascinating evening.

At our November meeting 'The Golden Days of Variety' gave us a real treat as our speaker entertained us with song, monologues, jokes, memories and magical tricks. This was not a revue of past glories but a real live revue with hilarious audience participation. It is a long time since I have heard an audience laugh and enjoy an evening so much. To cap it all we had our wine and cheese (and chat) in the café which provided a really good place to catch up on news and gossip. My thanks to all who helped us have such a good finale to our 2019 season.
Peter Rainey

Village Market Stall
Thank you to everyone for your donations to the Village Market Stall at the Sale of Work. It is not always possible to identify everyone who leaves contributions in the collecting box, so if I haven't thanked you personally please accept this message of appreciation! This stall is the major representative of the Village at the Sale of Work and it couldn't happen without your support. The final total has not yet been announced but our stall always makes a significant contribution to the funds raised for local, National and International charities.
Frances Wimbush

It is hoped that at some point in the future a new group will be formed.

With great sadness we report that Rosemary Mumford passed away at home, with her family at her side, on Monday November 4th. Her funeral was held on Tuesday 19th November. Rosemary was very active in the WI and in all Milton activities, she and her amazing smile will be very greatly missed by all.

Due to the early copy date for the magazine, we are not able to give any information regarding our meeting on November 12th, but we are looking forward to listening again to Dr.Catrin Rutland on 'Life in a Vet School'. She visited us in 2018 and we were really inspired by her talk. Later in November we will have our Christmas meal at The Dragon, Willington.

On the 10th December we are holding our Christmas Social, so we will arrive looking and hopefully feeling Christmassy, to be entertained by 'Five in Harmony'. All are welcome to our meetings.

Newton Solney Parish Council
Planning – Planning application for an Agricultural Building at The End is still under consideration.

Bonfire – The village bonfire due to be held on 2 November was unfortunately cancelled due to exceptionally inclement weather. The bonfire site was surrounded with water, which had prevented its construction and the spectator area was deemed unsafe. It is hoped that the event will take place next year, subject to weather. The materials deposited for the fire will be burned as soon as possible and any help in this will be much appreciated. Please contact a Parish Councillor or Jeremy Winter if you are able to assist. Any further depositing of materials will be considered as fly tipping and subject to prosecution.

Common Land Security – This project is moving forward slowly with further representations being made both to Derbyshire County Council and South Derbyshire District Council. Both Councils have asked for instances of anti social behaviour and fly tipping etc. to be recorded and forwarded to the Parish Council/SDDC which will aide them in granting approval. It is important that this is undertaken by residents and ALL incidents are recorded. This inevitably will delay moving forward with the installation of the barrier and securing the Common Land. The object of this proposed project is to protect the area and make it safe.

A log is to be compiled by Councillor Anne-Louise Sedgwick of any anti-social behaviour and fly tipping. Any photos of anti social behaviour, fly tipping and other incidents should be forwarded to her complete with associated dates. In addition they should be reported to the Police using the 101 number so that they can be recorded and given an incident number.

Damage to stone pillar on Church Lane – The reinstatement of the stone pillar on Church Lane is in hand and it is hoped that this will be complete in the near future...

Silver birch tree adjacent to 19, Blacksmiths Lane – The petition compiled by a number of residents concerning the silver birch tree has been forwarded to Derbyshire County Council by County Councillor Linda Chilton and their response is awaited.

Transforming Trent Valley – Our South Derbyshire District Councillors are to arrange a joint meeting with other Parish Councils to listen to Nicola Lynnes explain the vision for developing the Trent Valley. Date and location to be advised.

Planters – One of the planters adjacent to the Alms houses has been moved and the Parish Council will restore this planter to its original position.

CEMEX gravel extraction – CEMEX held a "drop in" event at Newton Park Hotel on 23 October 2019 to show their proposal. Planning application will be made in due course. The existing workings will continue for 3 or 4 years and any new extension will take a further 4 years.

Scamwatch – Derbyshire Scam Watch are offering to talk to members of the community and organisations within the community warning of the dangers of scams that may be taking place and to safeguard individuals. Their web site is www.derbyshirescamwatch.org.uk. Local organisations in the village are to be notified of this service.

Next meeting: 13 December 2019 at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. All are welcome.

You and your Pet

My pet's been poisoned, what should I do?
Pet poisonings are one of the most common emergencies our Vets and Vet nurses see. Statistics show 9 in 10 of these happen in their own home. During certain holiday seasons - including winter, cases go up considerably, often as a result of chocolate ingestion or eating foods with raisins, sultanas and currants. Antifreeze is a common poison in cats as they are attracted to the sweet smell and taste of the solution.

Signs of pet poisoning are vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness, lethargy, salivating, loss of appetite, convulsions and coma.

Chemicals or plants that come into contact with your pet's skin can cause skin irritation. What should you do?

Try and make a note of the toxin's name, strength and the amount your pet has ingested or been exposed to. Contact your vet as soon as possible and they will advise you with the best treatment for your pet. Try and keep your pet away from areas where chemicals and toxins are being used and do not keep poisonous plants in the house.

Keep chocolate and Christmas cake in a cupboard so your pet cannot easily access them.

Contact your vet if you have any concerns regarding poisons in your pets.

Cats looking for homes
Derby and District Branch of Cats Protection is seeking suitable properties such as farms, riding stables, smallholdings in which to rehome two or three 'community'cats, i.e. those not deemed to be 'lap cats'. These cats are exceptionally efficient when it comes to controlling pests and often just their presence alone is enough to keep rats and mice away. All are neutered and inoculated and Branch volunteers would initially settle them into their new home.

If you would like more information, please ring Jane on the Catline on 01332 206956, leaving your name, telephone number and a short message.

Neighbourhood Watch

SDDC Area Forum Meeting
On Thursday November 7th Milton village hall hosted the SDDC forum meeting.

The Safer Neighbourhood Team reported on recent campaigns regarding the free marking of equipment following a spate of thefts from vans in the area, free bike marking at Willington school and a campaign to raise awareness of hate crime. They were also hopeful that some of the extra officers being recruited nationally would be allocated to South Derbyshire although the exact number is not yet known. They reported that the campaign to combat anti-social behaviour over the Halloween and bonfire night period had been very successful. Members of the public put forward questions regarding instances of anti-social behaviour, fly tipping and evidence of drug taking at various sites and the attendees were urged to report such incidents either by calling 101 or reporting this on the SDDC website. By reporting these incidents and also those of excessive speeding in villages it will provide them with statistics to target specific areas.

Following the meeting the Safer Neighbourhood team sent the following message:
We have attended the local Neighbourhood Forum this evening. It is apparent from this meeting that both Crimes and Incidents are not being reported via the correct means. Please see below the correct way to report both crimes, incidents or suspicious circumstances.

•Facebook – send us a private message to /DerbyshireConstabulary
•Twitter – direct message our contact centre on @DerPolContact
•Complete the online contact form www.derbyshire.police.uk/Contact-Us
•Call us on 101.
Grants are available for local groups to prevent anti-social behavior and reduce crime.

Four areas are being piloted for wildflower planting one of which is the Hartshorne Road in Repton. Planting will take place in Spring and if successful the scheme will be extended to other areas in South Derbyshire. Feedback would be welcomed.

Remember: Always look out for your elderly and vulnerable neighbours.
