The Porch

The porch was added (probably late) in the 14th century.   Its upper storey, or parvise, was originally approached by a winding stairway from the church.   Early in the 19th century, when the parvise was used as a schoolroom, that stairway was replaced with one opening from the porch itself, but the doorway leading to it is still to be seen in the south wall of the church.

In 1935, the plaster ceiling was removed to reveal the 15th century beams, and the windows were repaired and reglazed.

The Anglo-Saxon columns to be found in the porch are fragments of those removed from the nave in 1854.

The War Memorial was dedicated in November 1917.

Above the church porch is statue of St Wystan.   His sword was donated by Pamela Carr in 2003 in memory of her husband, Douglas, who died in 1991.
