Corporal A.J. Hawksworth
Alfred John 'Sunny' Hawksworth
  AJ Hawksworth: Headstone

Alfred John Hawksworth was the eighth of nine children of an old Repton family. He grew up at Park End towards the bottom (south end) of Main Street and attended the village primary school.   His mother died when he was still very young and he had a hard childhood.   However, his happy nature was reflected in his nickname, 'Sunny'.   Before the war he worked in Taylor's shop in Repton High Street (now a restaurant), starting when he was 13.   He was conscripted at 18 and spent most of the war as a military policeman in Cairo.   Invalided back to England in 1944, he died of cancer in Aldershot at the age of 24.   Buglers from the Royal Signals unit stationed at Foremarke played the Last Post at his funeral.
